The European Union is a major supporter of Ukraine and had finalized a loan package exceeding $100 billion earlier this year. However, when a group of European officials arrived in Kyiv to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy informed them that the country was facing a larger-than-expected defense budget shortfall and required an additional $27 billion to make it through the year.
